“ I have invented many meditations, but perhaps this one will be the most essential and the most fundamental.” Osho
Laugh, Cry, and Let the Scars of the Past Dissolve into Silence.
We are all used to living while hiding our true feelings, suppressing hurts, concealing our real desires… We do not accept our pain and vulnerability; instead, we hide them behind a mask of strength or a heavy outer armour.
But we forget that all these repressed resentments, emotions, and experiences accumulate in our unconscious and in our body, year after year, from the moment we are born. This is where illnesses, fears, unhealthy communication patterns, and dysfunctional ways of relating to the world around us come from.
We appear open, yet at the same time we do not know how to express ourselves… We want to trust, yet we constantly hide our true nature for fear of being rejected again or hurt once more. We long for new experiences and wish to reach new heights, yet we are afraid to take the first step. We desire to open ourselves to love and trust with another person, yet we continue to protect our hearts and conceal our real feelings.
This is why Osho created his series of Meditative Therapies. These are revolutionary processes based on Osho’s understanding and vision of how therapy should function — simply as a bridge towards meditation. We can spend years and decades seeing therapists, or we can come into contact with meditation and awareness, and watch the world begin to change both inside and outside ourselves. In this process, we are both the therapist and the patient at the same time. “Mystic Rose” is the peak of Osho’s creation, the culmination of his 30 years of work on meditation.
What is the purpose of the Mystic Rose process?
Despite its apparent simplicity, the Mystic Rose process is extremely powerful and effective, capable of radically transforming consciousness and bringing you to a new level of being.
This process must be done in a group, where the energy of each participant supports the whole process. The facilitator is not a therapist, but someone who holds a space of safety and openness for the group.
This meditative therapy follows a very specific structure: one week of laughter, one week of tears, and one week of witnessing.
The laughter allows all repressed emotions, inhibitions, and suppressions to be released. The week of tears opens the next layer, where we can come into contact with pain, wounds, hurts, and suffering. And once we have dropped much of our inner weight, the third week — the week of silence — becomes an opportunity to bring awareness and meditation into our lives.

Osho explains the process:
“For seven days we laugh for no reason at all, for three hours each day.
“The first part… for three hours people simply laugh for no reason at all… Digging for three hours, you will be surprised how many layers of dust have accumulated on your being. It cuts through them like a sword, in one stroke. Seven days continuously, three hours each day… you cannot imagine the transformation that can happen within your being.”
“When a man reaches his deepest core, he will discover that the first layer is laughter and the second layer is agony, tears.”
During the following seven days, it is tears without any reason, for three hours a day.
“So for seven days you must allow yourself to sob, cry, without any reason — simply because the tears are ready to come.”
“The first part removes everything that obstructs your laughter — all the inhibitions of humanity’s past, all the repressions. It cuts them away. It creates a new space within you, but you still need to take a few more steps to reach the temple of your being, because you have repressed so much sadness, so much despair, so much anxiety, so many tears — they are all there, covering you and destroying your beauty, your grace, your joy.”
The third part is the moment of the “Watcher on the Hill” — simply being aware of everything happening inside and outside.
“And my effort here is to remove all your scars and wounds and make you aware that you are simply an observer. An observer cannot be wounded; no bullet can pass through him, no nuclear bomb can destroy him.”
“Just be a witness. Go on witnessing whatever happens in the mind, and the very process of witnessing contains the whole secret.”
“Then you know that you are simply the quality of awareness, that you are pure consciousness, a witness, that you are a mirror and nothing else, that you are simply an observer — an observer on the hill.”
“This is freedom. This is what is called liberation, nirvana. And this man knows what bliss is!”
As Osho further explains:
“Laughter is tremendous medicine. It is an extremely powerful therapy. If you can laugh at your own unconsciousness, the unconscious loses its power. In your very laughter, your guilt and your wounds disappear.”
“I am giving you a very fundamental, new, and unusual technique. And it is going to become worldwide, without doubt, because its effects will show everybody that the person has become younger, more loving, more graceful. The person has become more flexible, less fanatical; more joyful, more of a celebrant.”
“All this world needs is a good cleansing of the heart from all the inhibitions of the past. Laughter and tears can do both. Tears will remove all the agony hidden within you, and laughter will remove everything that prevents your ecstasy.”
“My own experience tells me that if you can laugh rightly, at the right moment, it will take you from unconsciousness into the open sky, from darkness into light. I present laughter as a meditation because nothing makes you so total as laughter; nothing stops your thinking the way laughter does. Just for a moment you are no longer in the mind. Just for a moment you are out of time. Just for a moment you have entered another space where you are total, whole, and healed.”
“It is absolutely my meditation.”
