Active Meditations

active meditationsUnexpressed feelings and tensions create blocks in our body and mind. They hinder our ability to think clearly, to relate to others and to relax into a state of stillness and silence.

Osho Active meditations help dissolve these blocks and allow us to access our natural and spontaneous selves.

Over a number of years Osho carefully and precisely devised his active meditation techniques. He said that never in the whole history of mankind have people been so tense, so stressed, so unable to relax. He said that traditional meditation techniques were devised for a different kind of human being and that people nowadays find it difficult to simply sit down and be silent – their minds refuse to slow down!

He therefore worked hard at perfecting meditation techniques appropriate for the 21st Century person which would help them to more easily and quickly slow down and relax. Most of his techniques begin with an intense physical stage such as breathing, shaking, dancing or humming to help each person throw off some of the tensions and stress they have accumulated. (And incidentally give the body a good physical workout at the same time!) These stages are followed by further stages of relaxation and stillness. Having exhausted oneself with so much physically activity it is easier to sit down and relax into silence.

All the active meditation techniques are accompanied by music composed and played by Osho’s disciples under his supervision. He worked with his musicians to produce exactly the right music to aid and enhance each particular meditation technique.

Combining these active meditation techniques with the more traditional Vipassana meditation is a very powerful way to help each person go into a deep, relaxing meditative state more quickly and easily.

Osho Dynamic – each morning of the retreat starts with Osho Dynamic, an hour-long meditation that is a powerful outlet for tension and withheld emotions as well as being a great energy-booster.

Osho Kundalini meditation is done in the afternoon. It consists of four stages of fifteen minutes each and is a gentle yet effective way to release all the accumulated stress of the day.

Other Osho active techniques that we might practise during our retreats are:

Mandala – a powerful technique that creates a circle of energy, resulting in a natural centering. There are four stages of 15 minutes each.

Nadabrahma – an hour-long sitting method, in which humming and hand movements create an inner balance, a harmony between mind and body. Suitable for any time of the day, it should, however, be done on an empty stomach and one should remain inactive for at least fifteen minutes afterwards.

Nataraj – a dancing meditation and an easy and natural way to turn in. This method has three stages and lasts a total of sixty-five minutes. Dance, giving it all you have got!

No Dimensions – this one-hour meditation has three stages. It is based on Sufi techniques of movements for awareness and the centering and integration of the body’s energy.

Gourishankar – this technique is done at night and consists of four stages of fifteen minutes each.
